Located about 20 kilometers from Nevşehir city center, the district of Acıgöl is one of the significant settlements reflecting Cappadocia’s deep-rooted history. In the 3rd century AD, monks and priests who arrived in the region settled here and worked to spread Christianity. Throughout its long history, Acıgöl came under the rule of many civilizations, including the Assyrians, Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Anatolian Seljuks, and Ottomans. The district takes its name from Lake Acıgöl, a volcanic lake whose water level has dropped below one meter, leaving behind a crater-like formation.

Acıgöl is also frequently visited for the Tatlarin Underground City, located about 10 kilometers from the district center and considered one of the largest underground cities in Cappadocia. Visitors can explore monasteries, churches, and living spaces carved into this vast underground complex. Additionally, with its well-equipped camping areas and rich bird diversity, Acıgöl is one of the top destinations in Nevşehir for camping and birdwatching tours.
