With its elegant minarets in neo-Baroque style and magnificent architecture, the Ortaköy Mosque is a must-see landmark for anyone visiting Istanbul. Located along the Bosphorus, it is also known as the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque and catches the eye in all its splendor from ferries heading toward Beşiktaş. Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecit and designed by Armenian architect Nigoğos Balyan, the mosque was opened for worship in 1854.
