One of the most impressive historical landmarks in central İzmir is Kadifekale, located on a hill rising 186 meters above sea level. With a history dating back thousands of years, the fortress is believed to have been built in the early 3rd millennium BC, following the death of Alexander the Great. Throughout its long history, Kadifekale was used by many different civilizations, making it a symbol of İzmir’s rich cultural heritage.
Expanded and modified during the Ottoman period in the 15th century, the fortress features striking stone and brick architecture, massive walls reaching heights of 20 to 35 meters, large cisterns covering approximately 750 square meters, as well as church and monastery remains. A must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts, Kadifekale also offers breathtaking panoramic views, making it an ideal spot for capturing stunning photos of İzmir.
