The Church of Saint Vukolos is one of İzmir’s remarkable historical buildings, attracting not only history and culture enthusiasts but also architecture lovers. The church is named after Saint Vukolos, known as the first bishop of İzmir.
Built in 1886 by Armenians of the Greek Orthodox faith, the church gained special significance as the only Armenian structure that survived the Great Fire of İzmir in 1922 without damage. Its well-preserved stone architecture and refined details make it an outstanding example of late 19th-century religious architecture.
In 1924, the building was converted into an Archaeology Museum. Today, it serves as a cultural center hosting exhibitions, concerts, and various art events, while religious services are still held on special occasions. With its striking exterior and simple interior design, the Church of Saint Vukolos remains one of İzmir’s most distinctive landmarks.
