With its unique atmosphere, the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) ranks among Istanbul’s must-visit historical sites. Built between 526 and 527 to meet the city’s water needs, the cistern now attracts numerous local and international visitors. It also gained worldwide recognition when parts of the movie adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel Inferno, directed by Ron Howard, were filmed within its walls.
